1 The Dutch Connection walks for cancer – 1372 dollar to date

Sponsoren gezocht!  "The Dutch connection" is een groepje dames die 60 km
meelopen ter bestrijding van kanker.  Wel moeten ze ieder $ 2,000 aan
sponsorgeld zien te vergaren.  Gezien de naam van het groepje en de
deelneemsters: Paula Martin, Martha de Groot, Irene Toonders en Karin Quinn 
reopen wij alle Nederlanders op, ter bestrijding van kanker een bijdrage te
leveren aan dit geweldig doel. Bijdrage via het internet is mogelijk:

blijven zitten, dat is wel wat waard. Toch?)


2 Koffie met Koster

Maandelijks koffie drinken

Volgende woensdag is het weer de laatste woensdag van de maand (28 februari
2007) en dat betekent bij elkaar komen voor koffie in het food court van het
St. Laurent Shopping Centre.  We zitten boven, vlak bij Tim Horton, dus kom
er gezellig bij zitten om weer eens in onze moedertaal bij te praten.

3 Tulpfestival – Dutch Café - Volunteers needed for Tulip Fest 2007

Calling all wooden shoe wearing, poffertjes eating, herring slurping,
smartlappen singing, tulip growing folk... 

Do you have some free time to spare? Do you want to give back to the
community? Are you ready to share a little bit of Dutch culture with a lot
of people? Then this year's Prinses Margriet Café Committee is looking for
you! 

In collaboration with the embassy, we will be running a booth showcasing
what the Netherlands has given to the world. We will also be found behind a
bigger and better bar under a rather large tent. A nearby stage will host a
multicultural array of entertainment. Admission to the 2007 Tulip Festival
will be free! 

If you'd like to get involved in the Dutch contribution to an international
village celebrating friendship, let us know. Any amount of help is more than
welcome.

Vrijwilligers gezocht voor Tulip festival 2007

Heeft u wat extra vrije tijd? Wilt u de gezelligheid van de Nederlandse
cultuur delen met vele anderen ?  Zo ja, dan dit jaar’s Prinses Magriet café
comitee is voor u ! In samenwerking met de ambassade, zal er een booth zijn
die laat zien wat Nederland de wereld biedt. Ook is er een grotere bar waar
wij achter staan onder één grote tent.   Voor entertainment is er een podium
met live muziek etc. En, nu komt het, toegang tot het tulip festival 2007 is
gratis.

The Dutch farm migration

The windmills which decorate the yards of many homes in and around Athens
reflect the Dutch ancestry of the families who live there. This summer, the
Township of Athens & Area Heritage Society plans to tell the story of the
last great farm migration, which brought thousands of Dutch people to start
a new life in Canada during the years immediately following the Second World
War. The display will be launched at the Athens Museum as part of Doors Open
Ontario, on May 26.

Significant numbers of those who emigrated from Holland came to work as farm
labourers in the area around Athens, sponsored by local farmers. Some were
single; others brought their wives and children. They represented a variety
of professions and many came from cities rather than rural areas, but they
were willing to do anything to escape the devastation resulting from the
wartime Nazi occupation of their country. Hardworking and devout, they soon
made a significant contribution to their new community, continued by their
children and grandchildren today.

The members of the Heritage Society are asking members of these families to
help by contacting the Society and sharing the family stories, memories of
their arrival in Canada and early experiences of working on the farm. Any
memorabilia which illustrate the family's experience, such as photographs of
the arrival in Canada or the first farm home, would be invaluable. Documents
and photographs will be digitally scanned for reproduction and returned
immediately to the owner.
