Prettige Feestdagen! Postbode R & D department is experimenting: As we will have more and more problems with being blocked by spam filters because we sent over 400 emails out at once, we are experimenting with new technologies. One of it is RSS and blogs. The postbode is doing some experiments with these new developments (The DCA is always at the forefront with new technologies), and if you are a geek as well, check the following website out, that includes a blog with postbode nieuws: http://nlpostbode.spaces.live.com/ On that same site, you'll find an orange button saying "Subscribe to RSS Feed". This technology allows you to get a message that a new blog (i.e. new postbode is posted) on the web site. In the new Windows Explorer it works great, but you can also get separate free programs to check RSS feeds. RSS is a great way to save time surfing web pages, as information is brought to you, instead of you going out and searching it. Mozilla Thunderbird is a free email and RSS program, but you can also use Newsgator (www.newsgator.com). Also look on the vastly improved DCA website, where all postbodes are posted on line in a text file. Our webmaster has been diligently working away with web technology. You'll find the latest and the greatest news on our site as well at www.dutchinottawa.ca As it goes with R & D, some things work, others are duds, but as the postbode has to be prepared for the ever increasing filter technology, we have to look for new ways to get the postbode to you. Ria 613-834-1690 2 Opera Bus Trips ================= On November 18, a full bus with 56 passengers left for Montreal. The opera they went to see was La Traviata and everyone enjoyed it tremendously. As before, the trip was offered at cost but participants were asked for a voluntary contribution to Roger's House. Thanks to the generosity of the group and of the Place des Arts, a total of $2,000 was thus collected. The Masonic Foundation hopes to have enough funds to equip a family room in the House by next year. So thank you all very much for your donations! The next trip will take place on June 2, 2007, when we will go to the matinee performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni. The first bus was booked very quickly. We are well on our way to fill a second bus but still need about two dozen names. So if you are thinking about joining us, please give us a call. Opera tickets are offered at $74.00 or $47.00, for a total cost of either $126.00 of $99.00 per person. These amounts include the return bus fare, the opera ticket, lunch, and a smoked meat sandwich and cold drink on the return trip. A cheque for $40.00 per person is required as a deposit for the bus and the opera ticket. If you are already on the list, maybe you know someone else who might want to join us. The second bus can only go when it is fully booked, so we are hoping that we don't have to disappoint anyone. Can you imagine a winter in Ottawa without DCA's skating event at Rideau Hall's skating rink? Of course you can't, and that's why the DCA organizes a fun evening of skating on either Sunday January 7 or January 14, from 5.30 pm until 8.30 pm. As usual, the DCA will take care of the "koek and zopie" (hot chocolate and stroopwafels). Tineke makes pea soup if we skate on the 7th. Anyone volunteering on the 14th? 4 Escher op YouTube =================== You may have heard of You Tube, you may have heard of the Simpsons. And you wonder what it has to do with the postbode. Well, here is an interesting convergence going on: the cartoon series "The Simpsons" has an opening shot, in which they run around and finally all run into the living room and sit down. Obviously, how would we ever get to see that clip, if it was not for You Tube, where everything can be uploaded. If you watch better, you'll notice that the room is an Escher style design and there is your link with The Netherlands. I admit the connection with Holland is far fetched, but do take a look at the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0ecHEr2mIk Warning: You Tube is extremely addictive and before you know you watch music clips from ages ago, crashing helicopters, UFO sightings, parts of TV shows and even instruction manuals. 5 Jobs, jobs jobs ================= In a search to fill positions for Dutch Subtitle Editor/Gaming Editor we came across your organization's website. We have contacted you because we feel you may have access to qualified candidates. Our company is the leading subtitling company in North America and is responsible for subtitling movies, video games, television shows, etc. Please take a look at our website located at www.sdimediagroup.com. Please take a moment to consider passing our job description on to potential candidates. We are looking specifically for candidates who have an expert level at writing any Dutch language as well as a high level of English comprehension. A simple explanation of the Subtitle Editing is: workers will watch movies or TV shows, in English while spotting/Quality Controlling the Dutch subtitles looking for errors and making corrections; the Gaming Editing requires translation of English gaming terms into Dutch. For those living outside the GTA, we also would consider having workers do translation projects remotely. We have both full-time and part-time positions (around 20/hrs per week) and flexible hours. The pay for Subtitle Editing is $11/hr during the training sessions. After the training is complete we pay $12 per hour for the first 90 days, after which the pay will be $13 per hour. The Gaming Editing and remote translation pay by the word translated and allows for a range of compensation of $14 to $20 per hour. We ask all of our applicants to complete a test of their language skills and computer savvy. The test will take approx. 3 hours to complete. Testing requires translation of English to the native language in a computer document. There will not be an opportunity to do a retest. This position is great for those who are new to Canada - workers do not need previous Canadian experience to do the job. Although our preference is to have individuals who have a valid work permit, we are willing to fill out a Labour Market Opinion for those who excel on our language test. Please contact me with any questions at the email asteward @ to . sdimediagroup . com. Best regards, Sent by Valery Kondratiev on behalf of: Alicia Steward VKondratiev @ to . sdimediagroup . com 6 Bert and the veterans ======================= Bert Hilkes writes: Another Remembrance Day has come and gone. I always find it a moving experience. Of course, in Canada, Canadian war deaths are remembered. I do not know if there are other groups in Canada who commemorate their war deaths. I only know about Canadians originating from Indonesia who annually remember the victims of Japanese Concentration Camps. I believe that Remembrance Day in The Netherlands is on May 4th. I also think that there are quite a number of Dutch Veterans in Canada and particularly in Ottawa. Would it not be nice if we had a Dutch Remembrance ceremony on May 4^th for Veterans of the Dutch Armed Forces and those of the KNIL. I wonder if people would be interested in this. I am prepared to organize such an event but first it would be necessary to find out if there is indeed interest. Could you ask the question in De Postbode. The answer could be in the form of a telephone call to (613)828-6828 or by e-mail to Hilkes @ magma.ca . Type "Remembrance" in the subject box. postbode
