Pauline 3 Back to the Nederlandse school!! It's the beginning of a new school year, so the Dutch School will also start again! Unfortunately we have had to say goodbye to Pauline van de Roest and Laura Jansen, but we now have two new teachers: Laila Sikking and Silvia Holtrop. Some of you may already know Laila, either from the DCA board, or because she has been helping out at the Dutch School on Saturdays during the last school year. Silvia will start teaching at the Dutch School for the first time and is looking forward to it very much! For those of you who don't know (exactly) what the Dutch School is, the Dutch School is meant for children aged 4-14 years old who want to learn Dutch language and culture. Classes take place on Saturday mornings from 9.30-12.00. "WHAT?!?! School on a Saturday?" some of you might think, but don't worry! We are trying our best to make sure there are lots of fun activities, including, of course, a visit from Sinterklaas in December. Registration will took place on Saturday, September 9th from 9.30-12.00, and classes will start this weekend. Further information can be found on our newly updated website: http://ca.geocities.com/nlschool @ rogers.com/ 3 CAANS - Armando presents Armando Armando, (born as Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd in Amsterdam in 1929), is a well-known artist in The Netherlands. Besides painting and sculpture, he has written dozens of books of poetry and prose, has made films and, with Cherry Duyns, has produced and acted in the absurdist televison program of the 70s and 80s: "Herenleed." Armando grew up in Amersfoort. During the war, he lived close to a Nazi transit camp, an experience that greatly influenced his art throughout his life. In 1998 the town of Amersfoort converted the nineteenth-century Elleboogkerk (Elbow Church) into a museum that collects and exhibits Armando's work. Changing exhibitions of his work are shown twice a year, and they regularly include work by other artists. http://www.armandomuseum.nl/ Petra Halkes will show and discuss some of Armando's work, and read sections from his prose collections. She will also show images of the Armando Museum and of the exhibition "Against Time" which she curated for the museum in 2002/03. "Against Time" consisted of works by Armando in combination with the works of six Canadian artists (Isaac Applebaum, Susan Feindel, Adrian Göllner, Mary Riter Hamlilton, (d. 1954) Marie-Jeanne Musiol and Steve Topping). The art of these Canadians touched on themes of memory and war that form an important thread in Armando's art. Petra will bring a slide show presentation as well as a possibly some video snippets. The presentation will be in English. The video snippets in Dutch (we got to promote Dutch culture, right?) In light of these new measures the government wishes to remind all air travellers that liquids, gels or aerosols are not permitted to be carried on board an aircraft, including in carry-on baggage. Passengers should pack liquids or gels in checked baggage. Liquids or gels include, but are not limited to: beverages, puddings, perfumes, deodorants, shampoos, suntan lotions, creams, hand sanitizers, toothpastes, hair gels, contact solutions, mascaras, lip glosses and other items of similar consistency. A list of aerosols permitted in checked baggage is available at the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) website listed below. Passengers with infants may bring aboard baby formula, bottled breast milk and baby food needed for the duration of the flight, as well as diapers, baby wipes and talc. Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket, insulin and other essential non-prescription medicines are allowed. Laptop computers, cell phones, MP3 players and other portable electronic devices are still permitted in carry-on bags as they are screened at security checkpoints. Travellers should arrive at the airport earlier than usual, exercise patience and contact their airline for further information on their flight(s). For more information, please contact CATSA at www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca or 1-888-294-2202 or Transport Canada at www.tc.gc.ca. 5 last call: Spreek je Moers Taal Cursus, Herfst 2006.
